Q5.What is a popularity curve?

Popularity curve displays how often the searched query is mentioned in blogosphere with respect to time. Fluctuation of popularity of a keyword with time can provide useful insights about the topic.

Regions marked in red on the popularity curve indicate that something interesting happened at that time. We refer to these interesting events as bursts. To analyze the reason for any of these bursts, you can select regions on the curve using mouse (which are then highlighted in orange). Once you zoom in, search results for that period of time are displayed along with a zoomed in version of popularity curve. To refine your search, you can further zoom in to granularity of one day using the zoomed in version of curve.

Comparison curve compares the popularity of queries blogs and blogs in blogosphere. Two terms closely related during some time period have similar looking popularity curves in that time interval, and hence these curves can be used to analyze relation between two topics.

Q7.Can I do a geographical search?

Yes. You can visualize your search results on a geographical map, just click on geographical search on the search result page.

Q8.How do I use related terms?

Related terms provide a quick overview of search results for your query. These are the words closely related with query terms in selected time range. These words can be used to enhance the search query further by selecting one of the five options

  • Search all documents: Search all blogs for selected word from Related Terms.
  • Search within current results: Search all blogs for current query words and selected word from Related Terms.
  • Search within current date range: Search all blogs for selected word from Related Terms, but with date restriction.
  • Both date and keyword restriction: Search current search results for selected word from Related Terms.
  • Compare popularity: Compare popularity of current query and selected word from Related Terms.
Q9.What different search result scoring functions are available?

When searching for a query, you can select one of three available scoring options. These scoring techniques determine the order in which the search results will be displayed.

  • Relevance scoring ranks all documents that contain query terms in order of relevance to the query. This scoring technique ignores the date and time information associated with blog articles.
  • Recency scoring ranks documents according to date and time when they were posted, displaying the recent most articles at top.
  • Combination of recency and relevance combines the effect of recency of the article with its relevance to the query when displaying the ranked list. This scoring technique displays most relevant documents at top with a preference towards recently posted documents.
Q10.What does Index Type mean? Which one to use?

When searching for a query, you can select between standard and stemmed index (under advanced options). When searching with standard index for the query consideration, all articles containing the term consideration will be returned. However, when searching with the stemmed index, all English words are first converted to their roots, and hence search for the query consideration will return articles containing either of consider, consideration, considerate or consideration. By default, the standard index is used.
